Celebrities & Surrogacy
The most recent news surrounding celebrities growing their family through surrogacy is the Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West family. The Kardashians are often in the spotlight, but I honestly don’t know anything about them except for the fact that they used a surrogate! I was happy to see that surrogacy was in the spotlight and not for a negative reason. The media tends to focus on the negative surrogacy stories when in reality those are quite rare.
It’s common for celebrities to keep the name of their surrogate anonymous to respect the surrogate's privacy, but I would love to pick the brain of a celebrity surrogate to see what it’s like. Can you imagine walking around with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s baby in your uterus? Or having Ellen Pompeo hold your hand while you get the embryo transferred into you? I know. I know. Celebrities are just people, but when you have seen them in movies or TV for decades, it would be surreal to carry their baby.
A few celebrities that have grown their family through surrogacy include: Tyra Banks and her husband, Erik Asla, who welcomed their son in 2016. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick welcomed twins in 2009. Neil Patrick Harris and husband, Adam Burtka, grew their family with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate who gave birth to twins. Jimmy Fallon and wife, Nancy Juvonen, have two children both born via surrogacy. Kelsey and Camille Grammer have two children born through surrogacy. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban had a surrogate carry one of their children. Elizabeth Banks and husband, Max Handelman, have two children through surrogacy. Robert De Niro and wife, Grace Hightower, have a daughter via surrogacy. Ellen Pompeo and Chris Ivery had a daughter through surrogacy in 2014. Elton John and David Furnish have two children thanks to one surrogate who gave birth to them both. The list goes on.
Celebrities, just like anyone else, choose surrogacy for various reasons. Unfortunately, celebrities are in the spotlight, getting picked apart for all of their choices. No matter who you are, you deserve to grow your family in a way that is right for you.
